Pilates is a physical fitness programme developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. It is a body conditioning routine that helps to build flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips, and back. It puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing, and the development of a strong core or centre, while improving coordination and balance.
Pilates allows different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from a beginners’ level to more advanced levels. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises. It also helps to improve muscle tone, balance musculature, support correct posture, and will teach the practitioner to move with ease and grace. It is useful for improving balance, lumbar stabilization and flexibility, lower back pain, and pelvic floor dysfunction. Overall it will create a better state of wellbeing both physically and mentally.
